Normally used for forums and message boards, and instant messaging. It's the act of placing "*"'s around a verb or phrase to signify thaty it's on action.
Today on AIM I used some crazy action stars to express my feelings!
Action stars are great for terms like *cuts*, *cries*, and *slices*.
