What is Afro-mexicano?

According to my professor in (Socio 31) - Sociology of the Chicano, an Afro-Mexicano is a heterogeneous mix of an African slave with a native Mexican when slaves were first introduced to Mexico.
Unlike slavery in the United States however, Afro-Mexicanos could move up the social ladder i.e. their offspring were not automatically born into slavery like the African slaves in the American South.
Darren: Hey man, you look pretty dark for a Mexican.
Roger: Oh that's because I'm an Afro-Mexicano!
