This word came from the Greeks. It meas Striving for excellence.
Arête got in they way of Billy when he would not help his friend because he did not want to be embarrased.

A secret society founded at the University of Maryland within the Greek community. This society was founded on the following seven virtues:
Kindness, Sincerity, Passion, Justice, Courage, Perseverance, Growth
This society does not seek recognition for itself, but rather seeks to recognize those who exemplify these virtues.
Arete drops off letters and gifts in order to recognize those they feel live out their virtues.
