What is At-large?

The status of being unregulated or uninhibited by normative social, political, and/or geographic factors. Similar to but not synonymous with the term 'freelance'.
'Carol is a designer-at-large. She has been in six different cities in the last two years marketing her graphic design services to other small businesses.'
