When you are having a conversation online and you read something funny, you would respond with LOL, but stop! Are you seriously laughing out loud? No! You find that you merely breathed out of your nose like a snort.
It is for the occasion where something is funny but not worthy of LOLing. When you LOL are you seriously laughing out loud, of course not! It is a quiet breathing hard from the nose.
