Bobbie

What is Bobbie?

1.

(Also known as CAPTAIN BOB or the MAN IN THE BOAT.)

Affectionate nickname for a BUOYANT, bulbousclitoris, which BOBS like a CORK on the bridge or prow of a lady's banana boat.

Often hidden and submerged until its owner has BOBBED or trimmed her bush.

(1) Made a fleeting, uncredited appearance in the uncut version of the 1964 film THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, starring Debbie Reynolds, when the part was played by an anonymous body-double.

(2) Obliquely referred to in THE CAPTAIN'S PARADISE (1953), but - in typically tight-lipped British fashion - remained hidden and played no part in Yvonne De Carlo's on-screen performance.

(3) Featured prominently in the popular song BOBBY'S GIRL (1962), when America's Marcie Blane revealed the focus of her love in a soulful performance. In Britain, the female longing for BOBBIE was explained, ambitiously, by Susan Maughan in a version whose flip-side was suggestively entitled COME A LITTLE CLOSER. Although both ladies were audibly moved by the obscure object of their affection, its exact appearance was left to the listener's imagination.

(4) Starring in the 1969 film SWEET CHARITY, although Shirley MacLaine stripped, swirled and twirled, displaying a charmingly classy chassis, one significant performer remained mysteriously in the wings, as it were. However, its central role was strongly hinted at by luscious Welsh chanteuse Shirley Bassey, who raunchily belted out the song HEY BIG SPENDER! emphasising that "I don't POP MY CORK for every man I see!"

(5) In 2005, GREYFRIARS BOBBY - a remake of the 1961 Disney film - had, among its cast members, the lovely Gina McKee. However, although a starring role had been announced for something "round, wet and shiny", this turned out to be the nose of the eponymous canine hero, in a shaggy, doggy-style tale of old Edinburgh.

2.

PANTRY PODENDUM: a buoyant, femaleAPPENDAGE, as described in the definition by author Persson*.

*ADDENDA:

(6) Explicitly referred to as BOBBIE WICKHAM, a prominent female character in many of the Jeeves and Wooster stories of P.G. Wodehouse, invariably described as "pert", "lively", "irrepressible" and "irritating".

(7) On a Hollywood set in 1956, poised to appear in Cinemascope in BHOWANI JUNCTION with Ava Gardner, was suddenly obscured from view by a plume of steam from an Indian railways locomotive. (Probably a deliberate tactic by the director, in order not to offend the film censor.)

Thus continues the mysterious case of THE INVISIBLE MAN IN THE BOAT, a figure plagued and repressed by a conspiracy of prurience.
