What is Breastmilk?
1.
Milk produced by a woman's mammaries which comes in several days after she gives birth, preceeded by colostrum. It lets down in two parts: foremilk and hindmilk. It is the best food for every baby. Despite all attempts by formula companies, it has never been able to be copied. Several hormones are involved in the production and let-down of breastmilk (i.e. oxytocin and prolactin). It also changes as the baby grows up to continue to provide optimal benefits to newborn through toddler years. There are many women who pump out their breastmilk to donate to hospital's NICUs or for personal donations. It has also been used topically for sensitive skin and for adults who are dehydrated and sickly.
I will be mailing 200 ounces of breastmilk to the hospital later today.
