Chiras

What is Chiras?

1.

Derived from the greek word "Kirio", a chiras (CHI-rus) is a term used to describe a gentleman. A man who is honourable, commands respect, well presented and well spoken.

The word was created by a group of friends from Melbourne's East, who are not necessarily all chiras' themselves, but have great appreciation for chiras' and chiras acts.

The term "chira" (derived from the greek word "Kiria") can also be used in a similar fashion for the female sex.

Also worth mentioning is that someone who is not necessarily a chiras themselves, can still perform chiras acts. A chiras act can be an act of selflessness, caring and/or looking out for others.

Chiras is the opposite of postigan

When someone arrives dressed in a suit, one may dust off his shoulders and claim: "Look at him...chiras!"

A postigan who thinks he is a chiras, may repeatedly flick his mullet, and say: "chiras chiras chiras chiras chiras"

See gentleman, postigan
