A comical play on "what's up", this phrase was coined in NYC circa 2005 while mimicking the loud and frequently garbled African American linguistic style revered and recognized in recent pop culture as "ebonics". Also commonly screamed nonsensically as an unwelcomed interjection into periods of serious conversation.
