A financial, emotional, reputational, or other personal interest in any matterheld by a personhaving authority over the same matter. Tking advantage of authority over such a self-servingpersonal interest may be considered criminal. At the very least, it is usually harmful to others.

Most legislators either already have been, or eventually become lawyers, so they abuse their conflict of interest over legislation to make sure that laws are conducive to the job security of lawyers and legislators.
