to go through all the motions of throwing up without actually throwing anything up. The continuous and prolonged action of gagging (see gag).
ie. the stomach convulses, you make the noises and you try to throw up, but nothing comes out.
She was such a mess that she spewed till there was nothing left, then just dry reeched till dawn.
