An excuse that is the truth, but either could be easily avoided or does not restrict the person from doing what they are avoiding.
"Is John coming tonight?"
"No, he used the excuth that he has school in the morning, even though we all know he goes out on school nights all the time."
"I think I'm gonna head home guys, I have to open tomorrow."
"That's the lamest excuth I've ever heard. Sit down, I'm buying you another shot."
