Forspill

What is Forspill?

1.

Forspill is a common Norwegian term which means literally "foreplay." It refers to drinking much alcohol before going out on the town. The purpose is to not only get very inebriated but to save money on alcohol. In Norway, a drink in a bar is very expensive, maybe $8 a beer, so it is frugal thinking to drink beforehand. Forspill usually occurs in someone's home in a very social setting. Sometimes it is spelled as forspiel. The practice is very socially accepted and bars will not usually deny anyone entrance, regardless of how drunk one is. Similar to America term pre-funk

Nattspill refers to drinking after the bars close, literally "night play."

Hey, let's go to Ole's pad for a little forspill. I have a half empty bottle of Smirnoff that we can polish off, and I have a couple of beers that I bought at the supermarket for $2.50 a piece.
