What is Goth/gothic?

A real goth doesn't conform to any trend. Wearing all black was an attempt to defy conformity, before it became a trend in itself. Real goths don't give much of a fuck about what they wear, it just happens that they wear black. This labeling is all about a persons mentality and beliefs, not the way the dress. Of course, because of little idiot kids, Goths have now become shamed... all because of little fuckheads trying to be different. It's all about the music and your mentality, not the way you appear.
Just because someone wears black, doesn't mean they are goth.

A state of mind. Someone or something that devotes time to or promotes things to the exploration of dark and morbid thoughts, to come to terms with the individuality of oneself and to search for inner beliefs.
Books such as those by Anne Rice, music that could be termed obscure, and literature styles similar to that of Edgar Allen Poe, encourage open minds and self discovery into the often forbidden areas of the mind.

A style of art, popular in Europe from the late 12th century to the early 16th century. It is also known as the International Style. Gothic art is mainly remembered in architecture. It was created by Abbot Sugert (Shu-ger). He planed to renovate the Cathedral of St. Denis, outside of Paris. Other famous gothic cathedrals include: Notre Dame, Chartres, Milan, and Pisa. The "Leaning Tower of Pisa" is actually the bell tower for that cathedral.
Gothic sculpture became more realistic, however, the forms tended to be elongated.
Gothic painting, like sculpture, had elongated forms, and was quite realistic. However, the artists failed to grasp vanishing point perspective. The most famous Gothic painter was Giotto.
I visited the Padua cathedral and saw Giotto's work. It was if he reinvented painting.

An artistic individual. One who often has an appreciation for arts, literature, and philosophies. The basic principals stand on this, and virtually this alone. Clothing and music choice have no real effect, as this is more of a more enlightened lifestyle and way of viewing the world. They often don't care about what others think, and are the way they are to not be so easilt categorized.
In today's society, "goths" where black, listen to goth music, and are "depressed". These are false stereotypes. People who consider themselves goths, but only apply to these characteristics, are often called "mall goths", meaning fake goth.
That goth girl from my English class seems to be so anti-social, she doesn't even keep up with fashion...

A goth likes any kind of music including Techno, real goths dont say they are indivudual or try to be part of the crowd(see the crap punk defination of Goth)

alot of defonitions i have seen on here put this compleatly blows goths out of proportion.
1] goth/gothic is but a genre that is usually associated with the more morbid-er thigs around. if a certain someone *coungh* FLUFFY *cough* was to find a dead animal carcas(AKA road kill), we would find another one and put it on the top of those minature racing cars and drive it around, seeing who could get the most scares. but thats not necessarilly goths. i do that, but that can be concidered sick, inhumane and wrong. but hey, it gets a few laughs going.
2] goths are NOT people who are always depressed, thats those fucking whiney
3] goths DONT slit their wrists, once again, thats those tacky litle inbreds called
4] they usually have a morbid sense of humor.
5] some goths like different music tastes. i for one love dimmu borigr, immortal and cries of distortion.
6] some goths take part in burning churches *cough* FLUFFY *cough* but thats mainly associated with SATANISM.

8] there are literally MILLIONS of types of goth: cybergoth, rivethead, industrial, lollita, metalgoth, the list is endless.
lollita - a goth usually associated with frilly things, lace, and umbrellas or parasoles. can be stereotyped to live a bit victorian like.
metal-goth - likes most types of metal music (like me, i listen to a wide range of music. from

A more alternative lifestyle, usually revolving around darkness, black, and sometimes Vampyres. Originally derived from Germanic people who invaded the Roman Empire in the early centuries of the Christian era. Today, is associated with people who wear black, leather, boots, have piercings/tattoos, and listen to 'Goth', Death Metal, Black Metal, Industrial music, and are into fetish/leather/bondage style clothing. Popular "Goth" bands of this day include Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. 80s "Goth" bands such as The Cure, Siousxie and the Banshees, and The Bauhaus are still considered by many to be relevant to the influence of the "Goth" scene to this day. Let it be said that Marilyn Manson are not Goth.
