A gothtree is one of many trees in the evergreen family.
It is characterized by having a unique ability to play random 80s goth tunes from it's trunk.
Also, you can usually pick out a gothtree by the Camels and the people with madly teased hair who like to camp beneath them.

Originally it spawned when the *xmastree* smiley was used by a single user who is a member of the EMS Goths as an accessory to liven up their topic titles. Since it was used often, other EMS Goths begin to use it in their topic titles as a way for other EMS Goths to easily find the board where their EMS Goth counterparts would be chatting.
And thus it became an iconic symbol of the Goths of EMS.
It is still used on the EMS board by the Goths who chat there. Chances are that if you see a board with that smiley on that forum, there'll be Goths there.
