What is Greet And Run?
1.
The act of seeing a person and reflexively saying "hey, how are you?" or equivalent without waiting for a response. The perpetrator gets away every time.
This is clearly wrong. The case is simple: "How are you?" is not a greeting. It is a signaler for conversation. It indicates the desire for a response, and it conveys to the person to whom it is directed a genuine concern for their state of being. "How are you?" is not to be abused. It is not to be conjoined with the word "Hello" or "Hi." It is to stand on its own two feet, remaining a meaningful element of the process of social interaction!
I was first hit by a "greet and run" in high school. My teachers and assistant principal of academics are all guilty of this heinous act.
(FLASHBACK)
Teacher: "Hey Rafael. How you doing?" (walks on)
Rafael: "Fine, and-" (Cut off by the teacher's walking away.)
(Rafael stands there, slightly confused.)
(END FLASHBACK.)
And I never answered a "greet and run" again.
