What is Grew Legs?

For something to "grow legs and walk away". Usually at school, work, or somewhere with a lot of people. Said item usually ends up having to be replaced, because it wasn't lost, it was stolen.
Man, I accidentally left my ipod in the car when we dropped it off at the dealership. I'm pretty sure it grew legs, 'cause I haven't seen it since.
