What is Gufu?

Gufu (pronounced goo-foo) is that essential something that makes a thing that which it is.

(I believe this is based on a real word from the Indian sub-continent although I don't know which language.)

If a ball has lost its bounce it has lost its gufu. If glue no longer sticks its lost its gufu.
