To get closer to a goal. To be guided onto a destination by a landmark or radio or visual beacon. (incorrectly called "hone in") by people who mix up the similar sounding words "hone" and "home".
The missile was designed to home in on the target.
The treasurer is trying to home in on his goal of zero inflation.
