What is Honkytown?

A friend told me after visiting a college in Maine that everywhere you go it's Honkytown. He said -and this is coming from a white guy- that it freaked him out and was a factor in his descision not to attend that school. I'm white too and that sounds like Twilight Zone scary to me.
