Alternate name for Spokane, WA, coined by Maloney of the underground newspaper, The Spokane Natural,in the late 1960's. For many years the Chamber of Commerce called Spokane and the surrounding area the Inland Empire. Ingrown Empire seems more accurate.

The current promotional catch phrase is "Near Nature, Near Perfect."

Ingrown Empire occasionally shows up in Seattle papers as a pejorative name for Spokane.
