1. from the Dutch family name Kluiver, Kluyver, Cluyver, occupational name for a court official, originally a hangman or torturer. Some Mennonites so named migrated to West Prussia in the 17th century.

2. North German: topographic name from cleve ‘swamp’. Compare Klever 1.
