2.

More appropriately known as the Al-Anfar Campaign, this was a 3-year long systematic destruction of the Kurdish peoples of northern Iraq by Saddam Hussein and the Ba'ath Party. During this time, approximately 182,000 Kurdish civilians were massacred by Iraqi forces, including the usage of chemical weapons.

The most well-known incident is the aforementioned destruction of a large village and its 5,000 inhabitants during one week in 1988. However, this was only one particular incident, and not the extent, as some would have it seem.

In 2006, Saddam Hussein was tried for, among other things, the systematic elimination of several hundred thousand Kurdish people in Iraq. He was eventually found guilty and hanged.

The Kurdish genocide is probably one of the main reasons for the 2003 Coalition invasion of Iraq.
