He tried to be a straight, fundamentalist Christian preacher in 1980-1981, in line with his Seventh Day Adventist upbringing, but, right away, he decided to preach to gays at gay events. He returned to his gay lifestyle -- so what. I do not judge him at all. But, society in general, and subcultures in particular (such as churches), can pressure people to be other than who they really are.
