it is the study of chemical structures and their activity relationships.

its one of the hardest subjects in pharmacy

and only about 10% of the students pass its exam.

later on it teaches you how to modify that chemical structure into a better compound, such as in drug design.

in the medicinal chemistry book " essentials of medicinal chemistry upate" the lactam ring is found in all penicillins, it has grave effect on its activity

the penicillins differ in activity according to the modification made on that lactam ring
