Dispite popular opinion, Metal is a very diverse genre, and has been changing ever since the early 70s. Different types of Metal and band examples are listed below...
Heavy Metal: Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Judas Priest, Iron Maidenand Dio
NWOBHM: (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead (although Lemmy refers to his band as Rock 'N' Roll) and Venom (whom coined the term Black Metal
Glam Metal: (also referred to as Hair Metal, various metalheads dislike this due to it being more pop than metal) Montley Crue, Cinderella, Twisted Sister and Kiss(at one point)
Thrash Metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Exodusand Testament
Progressive Metal: Dream Theater, Symphony X and Opeth (death metal influenced)
Groove Metal: Pantera and DevilDriver(also death metal influenced)
Death Metal: Children of Bodom, Opeth and Devildriver
Metalcore: Lamb of God, Killswitch Engageand Chimaira
Black Metal: Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Venom (although modern Black Metal is much different than Venom.)
Nu-Metal: (unfortunately, mainstream idiots call this shit metal, it isn't metal in my opinion) Korn, Slipknot and Limp Biskit
I messed up the metal genres in my definition for metal, so I made a definition for metal genres to correct myself.
