Microsoft Tax

What is Microsoft Tax?

1.

The portion of the cost of a new computer that goes towards the Microsoft Windows license typically attached to it. Typically used derogatively in the free softwarecommunity, which consists of people who would rather have no operating system supplied with their new PC. Due to the tactics of Microsoft towards computer manufacturers, this is rarely possible, unless the computer is a Macintosh.

Guy: I want a new PC to run Ubuntu, and I'd rather not pay the Microsoft Tax, but I don't have the time or know-how to put together a PC from scratch.

Other Guy: That sucks. Microsoft should stop being such greedy pigs.

Guy: I know!
