A pixelfriend is a friend that is online only. Generally communication is kept via instant messenger or chat rooms only.
For example, you have met some one in a Yahoo or MSN chat room, and continue to keep in touch via the chat room or instant messenger. If it is unlikely that you will meet this person out side of the internet, then this person is a pixelfriend.
