As opposed to 'going swimming,' poolin or 'poolin it' can include tanning, drinking, bbq-ing, use of floaties or fun-noodle warfare, as well as other popular cultural practices in and around a typically outdoor swimming pool.
This principle is exuded in the act of 'hot-tubbin it' as well, which is more popular seasonally in the temperate climates.
