The erstwhile father of the comic strip character Popeye the Sailor. Popeye, who orginally was parentless, first appeared as a minor character in cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar's comic strip "Thimble Theatre" on January 17, 1929. Poopdeck Pappy, Popeye's long-lost, woman-hating father, himself did not come into existence until the Popeye the Sailor animated film short "Goonland" (1938), created by Max Fleischer.
