Usually the singers sing about cleaned up, preppy topics such as girlfriends, boyfriends, going to the beach, having a lot of money, the prom, going to parties, etc. The guitars are not as heavy and the music is happier and more melodic.

Preppy rock: Boys Like Girls, Faber Drive, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Hawthorne Heights, Bowling for Soup, Jonas Brothers, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy.

Real rock: Tool, Trapt, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Van Halen, The Doors, etc. Ocean Avenue is a true example of preppy rock.
