Although it is a very rare occurrence, when two different colours of chromatic (as opposed to metallic) dragon mate, they will produce a rainbow dragon as an offspring. A rainbow dragon has a colouring that is a combination of the colouring of their parents, in addition to having a mixture of their parents' abilities, such as breath type and elementalresistances. They are also generally even more powerful than two dragons of their parents' colours combined (relative to the rainbow dragon's age).

A rainbow dragon's scales are not a flat, solid colour, but a cloudy, swirling, overlaid texture; so, the offspring of a black dragonand a white dragon (the weakest possible rainbow dragon) would not be a solid gray, but a cloudy pattern of black, white, and various shades of gray on each scale.

When a rainbow dragon is young, their scales are ordinarily a very dark colour, and are often mistaken for a baby black dragon at a distance. When they grow older, their scales lighten in tone and become increasingly shiny and radiant. The most powerful type of dragon to exist, an ancient rainbow dragon born from a red dragon and a blue dragon, will have an incredibly brilliant iridescent hue to their scales, a smooth swirling mixture of deep but bright sapphire blue, lustrous royal purple, and almost glowing traces of red and green. Such iridescent scales are composed of one of the hardest materials known to humanity and, along with the teeth and claws of the ancient rainbow dragon, are amongst the most valuable and sought-after treasures that exist.
