What is Rumblestrip?

A strip of grooved pavement along the side of the highway, consisting of a pattern of indentations in the pavement. Makes a loud rumbling noise when driven upon. Designed as a safety device to alert drivers when they are about to go off the side of the road. Looks something like this:

I must have dozed off at the wheel because next thing I know, I heard a loud noise and found myself driving on the rumblestrip.
