What is Russian Doll Reference?

1.

This is when some one wrongly attributes a culture reference to a source which is actually referencing the original source. Russian Dolls are tools where a doll is hidden in another hidden in another.

The references can go far far back, depending on the culture reference and the intelligence of the people. This can be done accidentally by anyone, but is generally done by teenagers who are too young to actually understand most of the references.

Me, creepily: Hello Clarice.

You: Ha ha, I loved that episode of House.

Me: What?

You: The episode Son of Coma Guy. It's from House.

Me: No, you idiot, it's from Silence of the Lambs originally.

This exchange discusses Russian Doll References.
