What is Saint Peter?
1.
A man, Simon called Peter, who was a discipline of Jesus Christ. While his real name was Simon, he was given the name "Peter" (which means The Rock) by Jesus Christ after Simon Peter answered Jesus's question of "whom say ye that I am?"
Some theologist argue over whether Jesus was referring to Simon Peter himself, or Simon's statement "thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
"He saith unto them, But whom say ye
that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said,
thou art the Christ, the Son of the
living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto
him, Blessed art thou, Simon
Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not
revealed it unto thee, but My Father
which is in heaven."
-Matthew 16:15-18
And I also unto thee, that thou
art Peter (Petros = a small moveable
stone), and upon this rock (Petra = as a foundation unmoveable) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
2.
Simon, renamed Peter (latin for rock or something, him being the rock of christianity). The first Pope.
