The SAPI (Small Arms Protective Insert) is a ceramic plate that is inserted into a plate carrier vest. They are designed to stop high velocity rounds that soft armor cannot.
The soldier complained that the Interceptor Body Armor alone weighed forty pounds with the SAPI plates, but stopped when he was hit in the chest with an AK-47 round and did not even bruise.
