What is Shamokin, Pa?

1.

A centuries-old town in rural Pennsylvania that exploded in population during the immigrant boom of the late 1800's/early 1900s. Main industry until the late 20th Century was coal mining. It was renamed "Coal Township" in the late 20th Century to reflect the influence of the coal industry on it's local politics. It's rumored that the name "Shamokin" is an old Native American term meaning "welcome." It's further rumored that Shamokin was built on the site of a friendly Native American village. People from Shamokin have their own lingo and are usually hardcore.

Tom: "OMG Johnny just got his legs severed in a freak mining accident!"
