Bastardisation of "smitting stick", any long heavy wooden object used to handheld weapon usually smash to face of an enemy.
The traditional Irish game of hurling (similar to hockey) uses modified "smotin' sticks" to hit a small leather ball. The existance of this game indecates the popularity of "smotin' sticks" in gaelic Ireland.
