What is Socony?

The Standard Oil Company of New York, S.O.N.Y., or simply Socony, was one of thirty-four independent companies broken up from the monopoly that was Standard Oil, as ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court. Socony merged with Vaccuum Oil bringing about Socony-Vacuum. Later they changed the name to Socony Mobil Oil Company, then to just Mobil Oil Corporation. Finally, they merged with Exxon in 1999 into the current ExxonMobil.

Socony is the originating company to ExxonMobil.
