A message that can be set on many instant messagingapplications which allows the user to tell his or her contacts what is happening, how they are feeling, or anything else they feel their peers should know.

To talk through status-messages on IM clients. This can be done one-on-one or to a group of people. It is usually used when someone will not "talk" because they are pissed off. Instead, they will status-message to communicate.

Often abbreviated to SM.
