What is The North?

a region that encompasses a full half of the United States. It now runs from Alaska and the coastlines of Washington and Oregon, all the way to the eastern shores of Maine and Massachusetts. This region has always had a higher population that the South, Southwest, or Canada. New York City is the still the largest metropolis with a population of about 8 million people. Other big cities include: Seattle,WA Portland,OR Boise,ID Billings,MT Denver,CO Sioux Falls,SD Omaha,NE Topeka,KS Kansas City,MO St. Louis,MO Des Moines,IA Twin Cities,MN Quad Cities,IA/IL Madison,WI Milwaukee,WI Chicago,IL Peoria,IL Springfield,IL Indianapolis,IN Evansville,IN Louisville,KY Cincinnati,OH Columbus,OH Dayton,OH Cleveland,OH Grand Rapids,MI Detroit,MI Erie,PA Pittsburgh,PA Allentown,PA Philadelphia,PA Baltimore,MD Wilmington,DE Washington,D.C. Newark,NJ Jersey City,NJ Albany,NY Rochester,NY Buffalo,NY Bridgeport,CT Hartford,CT Providence,RI Boston,MA Springfield,MA Worcester,MA Portland,ME and Manchester,NH.
Some of the best accents in the world (manner of speaking) are all throughout the North, with the most famous being Boston Urban, New Joysey, NYC, Ohio Brogue, Chicago Urban, Midwestern nasal twang, and South Midwest "rural" nasal twang.
Every race in the world are in various parts of the North, especially NYC and Chicago. All ethnicities and nationalities reside within these giant cities, as these are cultural, cosmopolitan areas where they all meet. This is the region that won the Civil War, even though not all of these states existed at the time.
The North also has a much stronger economy, based on both manufacturing and "clean" industries (pharmaceuticals/software), insurance and banking companies, and a little bit of agriculture.
As animosity still remains from the American Civil War, a lot of Southerners despise Northerners, calling them "damyankees", and some in the southern Midwest they call "traitors", for being pro-Union and much less into the redneck culture. The North has always been a successful, prosperous region with diverse people, places, industries, and forms of entertainment. The North continues to thrive and grow today as well.
The North Rules and is a great place to live in.

The Midwest is comprised of 12 states NOT KENTUCKY DAMN!!!!! You seem to be so determined to include Kentucky as the north/Midwest it's sickening. The Ohio River definition you gave stating "The Ohio River seperates Kentucky and West Virginia from the rest of the Midwest" is purely ignorant. Any logical person would see that the Ohio River is the true diver between the North and South. Hell I don't know why you even want to be Midwestern for THEY DON'T EXCEPT US AS THEIR REGION unlike the South. HEll they don't even want to claim the SOuthern region of their state that touches Kentucky, because it's so much more Southern than Midwestern. Even back during the Civil War Lincoln feared that he would have to fight off Southern Il, IN, And OH because they had such a Southern bond with a Southern state Kentucky. Kentucky did not succeed from the Union in it's best interest after all it is boarding 3 Midwestern states. Kentucky surely would have been burned to ashes, Just look at how fast they took Tennessee.
If you have ever seen the PBS speacial "Do You Speak American" "Southern Addition" the narrator was sailing on a boat in the Ohio River to emphasize that the Southern accent not only ingulfs Kentucky but even extends across the River into Southern Indiana,Illinois, and Ohio.
So please do me and everyone else a favor open your eyes and relize that you are on the Southern side of the Mason Dixon Line (Kentucky) making you a Southerner.
No.2 The South is not only the most populated region in the Nation but is also the fastest growing region in the Nation, Hell the South is growing faster than the Midwest and Northeast combined and it comprises of 16 states Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georiga, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, KENTUCKY, Virginia, Oklahoma, Arkansas, West Virgina, Maryland and Delaware THIS IS THE OFFICIAL DEFINTION
Also MidwesternSoldier I forgot if this was your comment or not, But it stated that "those Hicks in Owensboro don't realize what region their in," If Kentuckians don't act Midwestern, or like a person from "The North" than why are you trying to categorize MY state as Midwestern, When it's "SOUTHERN." More specifically Mid- Southern along with North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia in my and most other opinions.

The northern half of the United States, pretty much any region where the only people who say y'all are african american. A region of the United States that has less obesity,violent crime,poverty,and divorce than "The Bible Belt" i.e. The South. A region of the United States where people don't have the need to brag about how Godfearing and patriotic they are or how more American they are. A region of the United States that has a temperate 4 season climate, where it isn't scorching, unbearably hot much of the year. A region of the United States that contains it's largest,most productive cities and metro areas (yes, L.A. most deffinantly is not a southern city, and California is not The South.) The North has tremendous diversity in everything from politics to ethnic and racial groups contrary to what some southerners whine about. Massachusetts has had republican governors,no democrat, non-stop for the past 20 years, has a low crime rate, and the lowest divorce rate in the country. Fuck that fat drug addict,confirmed bachelor Rush Limbaugh. The cities with the lowest crime rates are in New Jersey,Conn,Cali, and Mass. The states with the highest crime rates,divorce rate,poverty,low sat scores,and obesity are southern.
The North is cool/cold in the winter,cool/warm in spring and fall, and hot in the summer. The North has a high population density, it's crowded. The state with the highest casualty rate in the Iraq War and it's aftermath is Vermont, not a southern state. New York City had a higher rate/proportion of it's young men in the army during vietnam than any southern city. My father is from The South and managed to escaped.

A place where people think they are more educated than southern people, and feel that just because they have a larger population they are a higher class people.Most of the north is completely liberal and think that being a queer is okay and that you should have a parade if you are.It's also a place where most people lack morales and believe killing innocent babies is a person's choice.And the only hopeful thing to come out of the North is Rudolph Giuliani.
The North is a cold version of California.
