In older times, the party might suddenly remember an appointment or meeting that they had to be at in five minutes. Nowadays, the party usually excuse theirself to the bathroom and emerge "talking" on their cell phone, making a claim such as their best friend or close relative was suddenly involved in a terrible accident and they need to leave.
