What is Threadrot?

When a thread on a forum has multiple pages, the title and initial posts interest you but it invariable descends in to three people inneundoing each other.
In a thread about something that interests you, on page 4:
easyguy403: "LOL Shirley never knew you liked fisting."
me: "threadrot! threadrot!"
