What is Trailutation?

The perfunctory greeting given to hikers who are going the opposite direction on your hike or trail, generally done with a quick nod of the head.

Bob sized up the oncoming hikers from a distance, giving him time to determine the appropriate trailutation he would use at the exact moment of passing.
