It may also be used by students writing critical papers in English Literature classes for much the same purpose, with the double bonus in the hope that dropping a big Latin-based word will get them a higher mark.

I noticed my buddy dropped "verisimilitude" in the opening paragraph, and didn't mention realism (or the appearance thereof) anywhere else. I told him you have to explain what this big word means, or your prof's gonna take off a ton of points.
