Early 1980s college term for an uncosmopolitan yokel. Popular in the far reaches of the Northwestern US. The initials stand for Yellow Ski Vest, an item of clothing which at the time was terribly un-chic, and conjoured up the image of a farmtown cowboy or ski-bum in his town duds. Usually accompanied by the brightly colored giant plastic comb protruding from the back pocket of his wide leg jeans. This in an era when those in-the-know had their fashion radar aimed firmly at London, and struggled to disguise any whiff of down-home roots. Now, of course who knows? Perhaps the Yellow Ski Vest would be viewed as 'hot'?
