Possibly due to the fact that people think that the prefix 'Afro-' does not exist or is in some way derogatory. And believe the noun 'Afro', describing a popular 1970's hairstyle is the only definition available.
Some really smart kid named Jamal was ridiculed for using the word 'Afro-American', but he couldn't understand why. Then society explained it to him, but he still didn't understand the logic, or lack there of.
