What is Critical Soil State?

critical soil state-when soil undergoing compression,wet and normal consolidation, increase shear strength and soil undergoing dialation ,dry and over consolidation,reduce shear strength ,both reach a constant shear stress state at which no change in volume occurs, the resulting state is known as critical or ultimate state. This is a simpler explanation similar to one used to critical flow in open channel flow.
