Firefins

What is Firefins?

1.

Firefins aka Fiery aka Celezûr, is a male Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin.

He is thought to be the fastest dolphin on Earth, being measured at about 62 kph (38.5 mph) on a single occasion while using a hydroplaning technique in the shallow water of a beach in the Bahamas. His usual top speed in open water has been measured to be at around 43.5 kph (27 mph).

Curiously, the animal is not yet well known, apart from some locals, even though the measuring took place in 2001.

Usual top speeds of Bottlenose Dolphins are at 36 kph (22.4 mph), which means that Firefins is about 21% faster than his conspecifics. Orcas reach 55 kph (34 mph) which is still less than Firefins' personal record.
