In 1967 Israel occupied the West Bank and the Gaza strip in its attempt to expand its borders.
Since 1967 until the present, Israel has slowly, but systematically caused the death of thousands of Palestinians through the implementation of racist policies aimed at breaking down their spirits or any hope for a better future.
Today, the Palestinian people are the largest refugee population in the world. Those who still live in the West Bank and Gaza live under sub-human conditions. Their movement is restricted. To go to a hospital, a pregnant woman needs a special permit. In other cases when a permit is given to an ailing person, they are often denied passage through a military checkpoint. Palestinians are prohibited from importing goods and medicine from outside the occupied territories. Employment is high and the only jobs available are in Israel. Schools and educational institutions are often closed down by the Israeli military for no rhyme or reason, citing security concerns.
In the last forty years, Jewish settlers have moved to the occupied West Bank and Gaza and have established settlements there with the support of the Israeli government and under the protection of the military. And, while Israel continues to confiscate privately owned Palestinian land from Palestinians, Jewish settlements continue to grow exponentially. The Palestinians now live in gulags or little enclaves separated by Jewish settlements. Their movement is restricted and they are often prohibited from farming their own lands on the outskirts of their towns and villages, their only source of income.
The Israeli Army has been videotaped numerous times using Palestinian youths as human shields when inspecting a Palestinian house or walking down a Palestinian street.
They have also shot and killed unarmed, peaceful protesters, both women and children and later called it a "terrible mistake". Yet, after 10 or 20 mistakes one begins to wonder if there is a policy or at least a systematic attempt to cleanse the region of Palestinians. Israel, of course, denies these allegations.
It is now clear, what Israel has in store for the region. Israel is intent on reducing the Palestinians to an impoverished society, living in tents and huts with sewage flowing through the streets. And, while Jewish settlers enjoy well-lit, 3 lane highways connecting one settlement to the next, and military protection in the millions of dollars 24/7, tax breaks and incentives from the government the Palestinians live in conditions not fit for animals. That is the story of the occupation and the sad reality.

June 1967: The Israeli military under massive unprovoked attack from Arab armies intent on destroying the State of Israel, defended itself against, Syrian, Jordanian and Egyptian armies on the West Bank of the River Jordan and East Jerusalem (belonging then to Jordan)and Gaza (belonging then to the Egyptians). This region was an area sparsely populated by nomadic tribes, some Arabs and some Jews since the destruction of the area the Romans called Philistina.
The Israelis won the areas now known as the "occupied territories," in the 6 day war of 1967. Any territory won by a country in war in which they were not the aggressor is legitimate to occupy.
In terms of occupation, Israel on the whole does not wish to unduly disadvantage the inhabitants of the territories but in the face of those who would wish to see the destruction of the State of Israel and the Jewish people residing within it, has had to defend itself against elements who would seek to do just that.
If the inhabitants had not fled their homes in the war of Israeli independence 1947 - 1949 following the UN resolution giving both Jews and Arabs in the British Mandate of Palestine a State and Self-Determination for both parties, maybe Jews and Arabs could have lived at peace here for the last 57 years.
